Hydraulic Turbine Runner Rehabilitation—Lower Granite Lock & Dam, WA

Dix Corporation completed a major turbine rehabilitation at Lower Granite Lock & Dam. The turbine is a vertical shaft, Kaplan type, rated at 212,400 horsepower.

The runner was removed from the turbine pit, and has been dismantled. The runner weighed approximately 500 tons. The blades and bushings were removed and replaced. Elaborate shrink techniques were used for new bushing installation. Crosshead link pin bushings were also replaced. Other miscellaneous parts and fasteners were also being replaced.

The runner was reassembled and reinstalled, followed by the shafts and headcovers, wicket gate operating mechanisms and servo motors.

Cavitation repairs were made to the blades, hub and cone, as well as to the turbine discharge ring.
